Inviting Contra Costa County LGBTQ+ Individuals and Allies
Meeting Description
This month is June PRIDE Month, so we will share personal stories from individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ and Allies from Contra Costa County and beyond. We will also share programs we have in place at NAMI Contra Costa to support the LGBTQ+ community, including our LGBTQ+ Support Group, Building Mental Health Friendly Communities for LGBTQ+ through our Innovations program, and our ongoing collaborative relationship with the Rainbow Community Center.
Many in the LGBTQ+ community face discrimination, prejudice, denial of civil and human rights, or harassment and family rejection, which can lead to new or worsened symptoms, particularly for those with intersecting racial or socioeconomic identities. Homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, bullying and feeling identity-based shame is often traumatic for people. Confronting these barriers and mental health symptoms with an LGBTQ+-inclusive mental health provider can lead to better outcomes, and ultimately recovery.
