Welcome to day 11 of our limited run series, Mental Health Minutes With Gigi. In this video, Gigi discusses how the NAMI Basics program supports families with children under 18 experiencing symptoms of mental illness. It is common for youths’ behaviors to be misunderstood in the context of educational or home settings instead of being seen for what it is: symptoms of severe emotional disturbances or medical conditions. Without treatment, youth may end up misread, punished, or even criminalized. NAMI Basics supports families by teaching family members to recognize warning signs and improve family dynamics by understanding the medical nature of the condition.
